role. Workshop Facilitator and Committee Member
date. November 2018 - Present
location. The University of Surrey, UK
Funded by Wellcome, FUTURESEX 2019-2020 is a series of three interdisciplinary events at the University of Surrey, questioning what are the futures of sex, gender and sexuality? How were futures imagined in the past?
FUTURESEX | activism and academia
FUTURESEX | the remix
FUTURESEX | 2020 (conference programme)
In addition to being on the committee for this project, I will be running a residential workshop entitled "FUTURESEX: The Remix" in 2020.
The Remix will explore how dance as a creative practice can contribute to sexualities research. We invite a small number of participants to bring texts from gender and sexuality studies (as well as potential abstracts for the FUTURESEX: 2020 conference) to a workshop, where a remix text and performance will be produced through collaborative movement. This event is fully accessible and no dance skills or knowledge are required!
As part of my work with The Artifact Dance Company, I developed The Remix as a Hip Hop-inspired method for making performance, which asks participants with no prior knowledge of dance or spoken word to remix words and movements to express themselves. The Artifact Dance Company has previously used this technique to develop touring performances, and to work in health contexts with survivors of gender violence, stroke survivors and people with various physical and learning disabilities.
At this two-day event, you will work to produce a remixed collaborative text, which will then form the basis of a choreographed piece performed by a group of dancers from the University of Surrey. This will be performed at the University of Surrey on the evening of day 2 for invited guests from the university and local community.
There are a limited number of spaces available for this 2-day workshop. Travel and accommodation will be reimbursed and there is no registration fee. More information and registration will be available soon. Please go to the FUTURESEX website (click here) for more information.
